    Dear Mr. Phillips-

I have not had a chance to read your book and am looking forward to purchasing it and learning more about your thoughts on the parallels between Vietnam and Afghanistan. I am a high school teacher in Omaha, NE and I teach a thorough course on Vietnam. After reading two of your articles, one from “World Affairs Journal” and one from “Small Wars Journal,” I have found that I need something a bit more concise in explaining the issues to Juniors and Seniors. I do the best i can to bring to life the events that took place during the Vietnam era and to explain the similarities and differences that I see. However, to be able to read or hear first hand accounts is something my students would be grateful for. I have the following request….please provide a written statement in summarized form that you feel high school students need to know and should know about the war in Vietnam and the war in Afghanistan. I hope that I have not inconvenienced you with this posting. I look forward to hearing back from you and I’m excited to share your thoughts with my students.

      Dear Mr. Blanchard,

Sorry to have been off-line for so long. I think the next to last chapter of my book, “Why Vietnam Matters”, which is entitled, “Tragic Aftermath and Why” probably has the best answer to your question. If I had to sum up what went wrong, I would say we didn’t understand the enemy, the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese, we didn’t understand our South Vietnamese allies, and we didn’t understand ourselves, that is our own defects and limitations. You can get my book directly from the Naval Institute Press at the cheapest price, about $15.

      Sincerely,

      Rufus Phillips
